Once upon a time...
Part One
Abu Dhabi, a 24-hr view

Prologue:

Pictures are worth a thousand words arent they? Hence, Ive decided to come up with this idea of putting up pictures from the past, yeah in my blogsite.

Well, time flows like a river, it flows like forever, cant be stopped. When it decides to stop, thats the very end of the world, I can say that.

Sweet nostalgias and bitter memories will remain be in the harmonious cycle of our lives. Yeah, full of ups and downs. No turning back as some people do say? Keep looking ahead? Thats partly true. But do grab the fact that one learns from the past. History sets up the what-so-called our world today. An individual cant simply change the history but one can learn from the history to bring lights and hopes into the future.

Thus, Im putting up these pictures wholeheartedly (part one). Yeah, to learn from the past. This is a promise.

Learning from mistakes,
hata@irbid

BTW these pictures were taken during my 3rd year/4th yr (tak ingat ok) summer semester, during the journey back to Jordan. We had to stay for almost a day in Abu Dhabi, waiting for the connecting flight to Amman. Free transportation and accomodation of course. It was kewl indeed. Hohoyeah~~

My First Day in Ophthalmology Cycle (ukraine guna cycle cam nak berbasikal ok!)

Got up surprisingly early. I took a long hot bath. I put on an emerald-colored outfit with a matching neck-tie and sprayed myself puffs of non-branded perfume. Satisfied, I went out of the apartment of mine, heading to King Abdullah University Hospital (KAUH) with blossoming enthusiasm. After all, it was my first day in the new rotation, Ophthalmology!

We had a lecture as early as 8 am, I hadnt had any chance to glance thru the new materials last night (YMing with some good friends of mine). It was all about Refractive Errors. Simple and uncomplicated as well. You mustve heard about the myopia, astigmatism, lazy eyes, concave and convex lenses, diopter, etc. It was OK although I dozed off in the class for several times. Hahah.

We are a group of 16 students, divided into 4 other small groups. Every group has to follow the given schedule. Oh no, we had to go into the Operation Theater. Gimme a break. It was our first day. Knowing nothing about the eyes anatomically and pathophysiologically will do us no good at all. Yet, we got into the changing room at 9.45am (really, its called a changing room) and put up the blue medical scrubs, the mask, the cap (what do they call this?). Well, wearing medical scrubs gives us a sense of professionalism and meaning! hohoyeah (jeling lagi kakmin)

The operating spot was so big and I nearly got myself lost! Therere bunch of doctors and medical staffs and I couldnt help smiling "am I john dorian?" harhar. So we went into an operation room. 2 surgeons were already prepared. This patient had squinted eyes (juling ok bukan mengecikkan mata) in which the eyes were deviated medially. What did they do? Well, therere several means in reestablishing the normal eye looks. We can either strengthen the lateral rectus or weaken the medial rectus (basic anatomy), and they chose this option and it progressed well. A simple surgery it was. It took nearly half an hour to shift the medical rectus posteriorly by a process called recession ( haha tak ingat ok).The doc kept asking us a lot of questions. This was almost unbearable!

Next, another case of squints. Boring. Next, cataract, it grabbed my attention to be in a full-alert state. They made an opening passing thru the anterior capsule, removed the lens, and put on an artificial one.

It was 2. Yeay! Since it was our first day in the cycle (main beskal), we were given an early break. Had lunch in the café, went home and took a long nap. Woke up later that evening to find a vertigo-like sensation overpowering me. Sigh~~

Elective Course

Once upon a time, someone sent me an email (tiru ayat kakmin boley?) :

From: "Elective Student"
Subject: Re: Elective Course in HKL
To: "Faiz Baherin"

Dear ,

Faiz Baherin,

Sorry to inform you that the management of Hospital Kuala Lumpur is
unable to accommodate your request to do your elective in Hospital Kuala
Lumpur during the period requested as the quota for the months of July
and August is full. However we will be happy to have you anytime before
July 06 or after August 06.

Yours sincerely,

philip

I'm a little bit disappointed. I had submitted the application to carry out my elective course in HKL one and a half month ago (via email). FYI, the elective course is part of my 6th year clinical rotation (plus all four other majors ie Obstetric and Gynecology II, Pediatrics II, General Surgery II and Internal Medicine II). Its an eight-week course, starting from June 25th up till August 18th. We can either choose 1 major rotation or 2 minors. Ive chosen to practice my clinical skills in the Emergency Department and the Department of Anesthesia (as stated in my recommendation letter).

Well, as an alternative, Ive decided to resubmit my application, but this time to Hospital Besar Seremban, situated approximately 10kms from my home. To be on an optimum health scale, I can WALK all the way to the hospital every morning (jeling kakmin ok) haha.

Why do I choose Hospital Besar Seremban as a resort?

Well, as you know, Nadbest of Ukraine will be carrying out her elective course in Hospital Besar Seremban during the summer semester (oso in Emergency Department, what a coincidence haha). Im looking forward, really, to "work" as a physician next to her (although she doesnt approve this idea very well haha). It can be interesting, kalbating with her all the day on kakmin, acap, torique, khalikok, miruL,wenkt, fauzan, IHAB etc. BTW do we have one single minute to do that? Sigh.. Yet, it boosts my spirit up haha.

OMG, Anna's calling from the bedside. I have to go! See u guys around!

p/s : I enjoyed the unofficial GUBU meeting last night, really. Thanks everyone.
p/s2 : Who's Philip anyway?

~~Farewell ENT~~

I was running joyfully on the ninth cloud, chasing the rainbow around when suddenly dark clouds drifted lazily by, out of nowhere. Yeah that's the typical me. That's what I feel right now. I'm wholly contented with my ENT clinical exam. I got out of the hospital and chatted joyously with my fellow colleagues all the way back to irbid but somehow part of my body was thrown down the hill, depressed and alone. Duh... Let's talk about something else, shall we?

Well, I slept at 3 last night, unintentionally. I woke up at 4 and screamed at the top of my lung, as high as 120 dsb! What did I do? I hadnt finished revising at all. Too much facts and info crammed in the cortical area of my brain might be responsible in casting a sleep spell on me. I sat up, took a deep breath and continued reading (my eyes were still red ok). I couldnt gain any info or facts at all. Frustrated, I climbed up my black computer chair and clicked on the mozilla firefox browser. Damn! The internet was down as well. Arghh.. Sila pasrah boley?

My journey to the hospital was uneventful. It was 8.00 and there was no one around. I stood in front of the vendor machine, bought myself one cup of milk chocolate (it tasted like eww though with pressed extra sugar button). I hang around the outpatient department doing nothing. The doc came all of a sudden, informing us that the exam will begin in a minute. I went into one small room with a male patient in it. Pheww, the patient was so cooperative. I had to take a full history plus ENT physical examination in 30 min. This patient suffered from chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) and maxillary + frontal sinusitis ( for approximately 10 yrs). He complained of pain in the left ear, vertigo, tinnitus and loss of hearing. Upon examination with the otoscope, there was a small marginal perforation on the left tympanic membrane plus redness and discharge around the perforated area. Rinne's test was done with negative result and it showed left lateralization by Weber test

The doc came and asked me to present my case. We discussed about the aetiology, diagnosis, findings, tests, investigations and managements bla bla bla. The discussion was ok although I made some points up at the spur of the moment (i forgot to ask the patients about several important points in the history). Fortunately the made-up points moved smoothly with the flow haha. My short case was all about facial trauma. Haha I didnt have any single idea about it. I skipped this topic hastily last night. Urghh I hate this bone-muscle-trauma-fracture thingy. What did I do was just babbling around, but luckily, I did pretty OK. Huhu.

Ok guys, Gonna have an extremely long nap. Farewell ENT, till we meet again someday

ENT Clinical Exam

The night is still young and full of promises. Its 11.42 pm.

Awakened by the irritating alarm sound of my mobile phone, I jumped out of the bed, heading to firds room. My tummy rumbled like hell. Dear, I havent had dinner!

Itd been a tiring day, I can say that. I woke up at 6 this morning to find my ENT notes scattered around the room hahaha. Thats me when the exam is just around the corner. It took practically half an hour to get it rearranged.

I had this uneasy feeling all the way to the hospital. Well, evaluation day! Well, the doc informed us last week that he will evaluate the students; each of us will be given certain alaamat or marks (10 out of 100 of the ENT cumulative marks boley?). Well be discussing some emergency airway procedures (tracheostomy, foreign body aspiration bla bla bla ). Well to tell the truth, Ive flipped thru the notes given but duh.. I hate these stuffs boley? The other seminar (Epistaxis) added insult to the injury. He digs the information tunnel deeply. Very deep indeed. Superficial info is enough ok. We arent ENT consultants!

Nevertheless ENT is appealing when u sit down in the clinic, observing the common cases (Otitis Media, Externa, Tonsillitis, Tinnitus and Vertigo). The only drawback is that they communicate in Arabic and of course there are some cloudy words and phrases. Heheh. More importantly, I can say that ENT is far way better than the medical department-slow-killing-method neurology counting in the never-ending rounds and seminars! And yeah the results were posted on the board!

I went home after the strenuous seminar and discussion. The first thing I did when I got home was throwing my body onto the bed of mine, which was the best thing ever happened to me today. I woke up from my sleep during maghrib to perform solah, tried staying awake but my reticular formation somewhere in my brain did a not-so-good job and I continued sleeping for like another 5 hours and here I am now! Hahah.

I have to pen off. My clinical ENT exam will take place on Thursday (seb baik bukan besok ok). Ive got to bury my nose under piles of books and tonnes of notes...nerd? ahahah God knows best.

Marah kerana cinta?
Oleh: Pahrol Mohamad Juoi @ www.fitrahperkasa.net

Saya masih ingat sikap `unik' (aneh) sesetengah orang-orang tua kampung dulu-dulu.

"Marah," akui saya perlahan.

"Tak cukup begitu sahaja. Esok kita berarak, bakar bendera Denmark!"

Saya senyum.

"Kita ada cara yang lebih baik. Ada senjata yang lebih hebat. Doa," balas saya.

"Kita kena tunjuk kemarahan kepada mereka yang menghina Rasul."

"Menunjukkan kecintaan kepada Rasul lebih utama."

"Marah itulah tanda kecintaan kita…"

"Betul. Tetapi membuktikan kecintaan dengan mengamalkan sunnahnya jauh lebih utama."

"Encik takut?"

Saya renung matanya.

"Mengamalkan sunnah Rasul memerlukan lebih keberanian… Tentangannya lebih hebat. Bahkan daripada orang Islam sendiri," tusuk saya perlahan.

"Kita bakar bendera mereka!"

"Kita `bakar' cara hidup mereka. Itu lebih relevan."

Giliran dia pula yang diam. Mungkin siswa yang `terbakar' ini mula mengunyah maksud kiasan saya.

Lalu saya ceritakan analogi awal tadi. Alhamdulillah, dia mendengar teliti.

"Kita dengan sunnah, seperti orang tua-tua dahulu dengan barang-barang usang di bawah rumah. Nak digunakan tidak, nak dijunjung jauh sekali, tetapi bila ada orang lain nak mengambilnya, barulah heboh konon nak digunakan."

"Bagaimana kita hendak tunjukkan perasaan marah?"

"Demontrasi depan manusia. Depan Allah, kita berdoa. Kita muhasabah, sejauh mana kecintaan kita kepada Rasul-Nya. Mungkin provokasi Barat membawa pengajaran tersirat."

"Pengajaran tersirat?"

"Ya, tersirat dari Allah… agar kita menilai semula benar-benarkah kita mencintai sunnah Rasul-Nya selama ini."

"Kemarahan ummah inilah buktinya," ujarnya bersemangat.

"Kemarahan cuma bermusim. Hanya luapan sentimen berkala. Namun kegigihan, kebijaksanaan, perancangan dan ketabahan jangka panjang amat perlu."

"Maksud encik?"

"Hidup lintang-pukang? Macam mana tu?" tanya saya minta kepastian.

"Rock habis. Sembahyang tidak. Bergaul bebas biasalah… tapi cinta mereka terhadap Rasul tak luntur."

"Ajak mereka sembahyang dulu. Tak berarak pun tak apa. Cinta dulu, marah kemudian. Bila ada cinta, pasti ada marah bila kecintaan dicela. Tapi kalau marah saja, belum tentu ada cinta… "

Dia diam lagi. Kali ini diamnya lebih panjang.

"Agaknya orang tua tu marah tak kalau kita ambil barang-barang berharga di atas rumah?" tanyanya tiba-tiba.

"Orang tua mana?" tanya saya semula. Hairan.

"Orang tua dalam analogi encik tadi itulah!"

"Soalan tu kurang umph," gurau saya.

"Habis soalan apa yang umph?"

"Agaknya orang berani tak hendak minta barang di atas rumah? Berbanding barang usang di bawah rumah?" balas saya.

Termenung lagi dia. Seronok rasanya `membimbing' siswa ini berfikir. Terimbau luapan semangat saya sewaktu di kampus dulu. Beginilah pola berfikir saya. .

Tiba-tiba dia bersuara, "tentu tak berani, kerana barang di atas rumah tentu lebih berharga."

"Begitulah sunnah, jika dihayati, diamalkan dan diperjuangkan. Ia nampak sangat berharga di tangan pencintanya. Musuh tak kan berani mengusiknya, apalagi nak menghinanya…"

"Encik ni, tak sangka ke situ pula kiasannya."

"Kita orang Islam mesti menghormati diri sendiri terlebih dahulu, barulah orang lain akan menghargai kita. Justeru, jika kita marahkan musuh yang mengecam Rasul, marahkanlah juga diri kita yang tidak benar-benar mencintainya!"

"Dan… bukti cinta amalkan sunnah Rasul. Itulah cara paling berkesan mempamerkan `kemarahan' kepada musuh-musuh yang menghinanya."

Alhamdulillah, saya yakin, kini marahnya kerana cinta bukan kerana benci. Dominasi cintakan Rasul bukan emosi bencikan musuhnya!

Journey to Southern Jordan Day 3 (Last Episode)

Pagi tu aku bangun lantas terus drive sendirian ke rumah budak2 ni menginap malam tadi (spt yang dijelaskan sblm ni, aku tinggal umah budak n9). Pastu sesampainye aku tengok diorang tengah makan roti canai. Ahaha tak kisah pon sebab aku bukanlah peminat roti canai sejati cam khalikok yang makan saban hari di Malaysia! Pastu tunggu2 jap diorang makan then terus ke Karak Castle, salah satu daripada Salladin's Castle, terletak dlm 15 minit kot dari Muktah. Aku tak masuk pon dalam tu. Malas plak, jadi tungguh sajer la kat luar.

Dlm 1030, terus bertolak ke laut mati, 2 jam katanya, tapi tak sampai2. Haha.

Sampai jugak Irbid kol 4 pm.

Malam tu semua keletihan, jadi semua tido senyenyak2 nya.

Jauh perjalanan luas pengetahuan.

Salam sayang tetapi mesra,

salam and greetings..

Journey to southern jordan last episode aku blom post lagi, ingat nak buat arie ni tapi tetibe terasa nak menyelitkan entry ni plak boley?

Wishun u guys a nice weekend!

Journey to Southern Jordan Day 2 (Part 2)

As-Siq adalah sepanjang 1.5 km, kitorang jalan sajer laju2 sebab takut dah malam nanti bahaya pulak nak keluar (takde lampu ok waktu mlm sbb dia kawasan gunung ganang).

Di penghujung Siq dah nampak monumen pertama ( Al Khazneh @ the Treasury) yang sering digembar gemburkan (sila lihat criter indiana jones) walhal aku rasa basic sajor, nun jauh di atas bukit ada lagi monumen yang lagi gempak. Pastu rehat2, jalan2, ambik2 gambar. At last pada kol 4 lebih sket sampai gak la kat monastery ni. Aku dah tak larat akibat hypooxygenation n lactic acid accumulation dlm badan. terus rehat. Kol 430 kitorang mula jalan balik. Takut dah gelap karang naya sajer kalo terjatuh dlm gaung ok.

Masa jalan balik bukan main letih, nak naik je unta atau kuda atau keldai tp ada terjumpa seorang kakak Perancis bernama Feni kot tatau camane nak eja. Dia datang sorang2 n memberi kitorang semangat yang jitu utk tabah meneruskan perjalanan balik. Sila sedar bahawa kitorang tersangatlah dahaga, jadi bila sampai jek kat entrance gate balik terus beli air dan anna. Rehat jam dlm 30 minit then terus drive ke Muktah.

Malam ni stay kat sini beramai2 kat rumah sorang budak Sarawak tuh, terjumpa Halfi @ Gen kat sini plak. Aku pon membawa diri dengan kete kat umah budak2 n9 (bukan asobiyah ok tapi member dah lama tak jumpa), supper kat bandar el-marj, borak2, then terus tido dengan mimpi yang sempurna.

Journey to Southern Jordan Day 2 (Part One)

Aku terus cekal haha. Tepat tujuan adalah Petra. Perjalanan mengambil masa lebey kurang 3 jam la lebih kurang. Dlm perjalanan berenti tepi satu kawasan yang dinamakan wadi rum. Kawasan ni sangat cantik terutamanya pabila sunset menjelma. Juga menjadi tempat penggambaran cite Star Wars. Tapi takleh masuk sbb ribut pasir, ribut pasir ni disebabkan oleh mendapan tanah atas jalan yang disebabkan oleh hujan beberapa hari lalu.

Dlm perjalanan banyak la gak berenti kat tepi2 jalan bila terasa nak ambik gambar, aku ikut jer, meneman budak russia jer. Tak lama lepas tu, sampai kat Petra dlm pukul 1.00 pm lebih kurang.

Journey to Southern Jordan Day 1

Salam n greetings..

Kisahnye bermula lepas aku baru balik exam neurology 9th Feb, masa tu hujan turun renyai2. Sampai rumah aku pon terus pegi sewa kereta. Kitorang sewa 3 kereta, 2 auto dan satu manual. Kereta manual murah sket tapi malas nak bawak ok. Lepas ambik terus bersiap2 nak pegi aqaba. Bertolak dari sini tepat kol 5.15 petang. Driver 3 orang termasukla bayam, wali dan aku.Memula isik minyak dulu kat irbid sblm bertolak.

Singgah Amman kejap utk makan, reramai pegi Burger King. Aku takde pon lapar sangat tapi tetap tabah makan. Lepak kat sini agak lama dalam 45 min kot. Pastu baru teruskan perjalanan. Hujan pun seolah2 berhenti. Pastu drive punya drive tak sampai2 lagi. Kereta aku dinaiki oleh aizat dan dua orang lagi dak medic russia (bukan ukraine sila jangan perasan ok).

Sampai Aqaba tepat jam 12 malam kot kalo tak silap. Terus check in hotel. Aku pon bukak beg tapi hampa, aku terlupa bawak spek ok. Aku pakai lens dan tertinggal beg kat umah. Jadi aku terus pakai melebihi limit masa (optimum 8-12 jam). Aku tetap tabah. Lepas solat segala, kitorang pon pegi jalan2 tepi pantai. FYI Aqabah adalah bandar tepi pantai, tepi laut mati. Bayu laut menampar2 pipi aku malam tuh tapi aku terasa agak basic sbb takder la sangat bau laut cam kat Malaysia hhehe. Kitorang pon jalan2 menyelusuri pantai pastu gi supper kat restaurant. Aku terus balik hotel sbb nak bukak lens nie.

Sampai hotel aku pon terus membaca buku Petra, konon2 nak menerangkan pada budak2 russia ni besok tapi bukak je buku aku pon rasa malas, terus baring2 sajor atas katil sampai budak2 ni balik. Pastu borak borak sampai kol 2.30 am pastu terus ngantuk. Maka aku pon terus bermimpi yang sempurna.
